Important Water Damage Care Tips
If your house gets flooded or you experience water damage in certain areas, there are steps you need to take in order to minimize the damage and stop things from getting worse. We’ve had years of experience with cleaning up floods and dealing with homes that have had the misfortune of obtaining a lot of water damage, so we have come up with a list of things to help you if you find yourself in this situation.
Before entering the affected area:
- Turn off the power.
- Attempt to locate the source of water and shut it off, if possible.
- Use caution when walking on wet floors.
Once the area has been secured:
- Extract as much water as you can through mopping and blotting.
- Wipe furnishing dry.
- Block furnishings with pieces of wood or Styrofoam.
- Block furnishings with pieces of wood on styrofoam. Be careful not to place anything with dye or color against damp surfaces as they may bleed.
- Take window treatments off the carpet, put them on a non-metal coat hanger, and consider hanging them on the drapery rod.
- Take away damp area rugs from carpet flooring.
- Relocate photos, paintings, and artwork to a secure, dry place.
- Open the drawers of furniture, closet doors, and luggage to enhance the drying process.
- Take damp books off the shelves and lay them out to dry.
Important DO NOT’S with water damage:
- Never use an ordinary household vacuum to remove water.
- Never use electrical appliances while on wet floors.
- Never go into rooms with standing water if the electricity is on.
