Removing Candle Wax and Other Spills From Your Carpet
Do you love the smell of scented candles? They can fill your home with a beautiful aroma. However, spilling melted candle wax on your carpets can be messy and hard to clean. We’ve provided some fast tips to help you if you ever have to clean up a wax spill or any other type of spill on your carpet.
Tips for Removing Various Spots and Spills from your Carpet
- Candle Wax Removal: Spread a grocery bag or other brown paper over the spill. Then using an iron set to warm, iron over the area. This will allow the wax to be absorbed into the paper. If you don’t have brown paper, you can also try terry cloth. You can remove any traces left with dry cleaning liquid or alcohol.
- Act Fast: The majority of carpet these days have a stain-resisting treatment applied to them. This means that if you take action quickly, you can usually remove the spill or stain fast. The longer you wait, the more likely that the spill will become a permanent stain. There is no carpet that is thoroughly stain-proof.
- Try Not to Scrub: Scrubbing the area of the spill can lead to pile distortion in that part of your carpet.
- Pre-test Any Spot Removing Cleaner: In a less noticeable area, test out any solution that you want to try using to remove the stain to ensure that it won’t damage the dye or fiber of your carpet. After putting several drops on your test surface, press a white cloth for ten seconds on the wet area. Then look to see if a change occurs. If it changes the carpet’s look or color, consider using a different solution to clean.
- Start Small: Apply a small amount of your cleaning solution to a white cloth and then gently work it into the carpet.
- Start from the Edge of the Stain: Begin working your gentle cleaning from the spills edge moving towards the center to keep the spill from spreading. Remember NOT to scrub but gently blot so that as much of the spill as possible can be absorbed.
- Keep Going: As long as you see soil from the spill transferring onto the cloth, then continue using your cleaning solution and blotting.
- Be Patient: When the spill has been completely cleaned away, rinse using cold water and a dry towel that whole affected area. Then use a paper towel stack of ½ inch applied to that area and weigh it down with a heavy object.
